Discarded by LSU, Brady gets job at Arkansas State
Arkansas State hired former LSU coach John Brady as its men's basketball coach on Wednesday.
Dickey Nutt resigned as Arkansas State coach last month after 13 seasons. The Indians finished 10-20 overall, 5-13 in the Sun Belt Conference.
"I think there's an opportunity to win here," Brady said. "I think there's an opportunity to win the conference tournament. I think there's an opportunity with the recruiting base here to get the kind of players that can do that in this league.
"Possibly my name and being where I've been and done what I've done can get us a little farther ahead of the game."
The 53-year-old Brady said he wants the Red Wolves to become the Sun Belt Conference leader in attendance, which needs to be done to help recruiting.
"Hopefully I'm the right coach to get that done," Brady said. "You have to be able to recruit the players that will help you win in the league you play in."
Brady wants to bring in top-level non-conference opponents, too.
"I don't think you schedule better than your team is at that moment," he said. But once the team is ready, he said he would work to put big-name teams on the schedule.
Brady was abruptly fired on Feb. 7, less than two years after guiding the Tigers to the Final Four. A year ago, LSU was depleted by injuries, most notably to Glen Davis. Tyrus Thomas left early for the NBA and last year's squad finished 17-15, 5-11 in the SEC.
Brady was 8-13 this season, 1-6 in the SEC when he was fired. Before arriving at LSU, he coached at Samford.
LSU assistant coach Butch Pierre finished the season for Brady. The Tigers ended the year 13-18, 6-10 in the SEC.
LSU is still searching for Brady's replacement. Arkansas State had interviewed former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson before a deal with him fell through.
