UMES, seeking turnaround, hires conference veteran Allen
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Maryland-Baltimore County assistant Frankie Allen was hired as coach at Maryland-Eastern Shore.
The 59-year-old Allen, a former head coach at Virginia Tech, Tennessee State and Howard, takes over for Meredith Smith. The interim coach's contract expired last month. UMES went 4-28 in 2007-08, finishing last in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
UMBC is coming off its best season in school history and received an NCAA tournament bid.
Allen took over at Howard in 2000-01 and took the Bison to the MEAC championship the following season. He won 52 games at Howard in five seasons.
UMES athletic director Keith Davidson said Allen's MEAC experience was key in the hiring, saying the Hawks "needed somebody who knew the enemy."
