DES MOINES, Iowa -- Tony Freeman, Iowa's leading scorer from
last season, is transferring to Southern Illinois.
The guard averaged 13.8 points and was a junior third-team
all-Big Ten Conference selection by the coaches. He said earlier
this month he would leave the Hawkeyes because Iowa coach Todd
Lickliter did not value his ability.
Freeman said Monday the Salukis gave him the respect he wanted.
He says Southern Illinois told him the team needed him to help lead
and mentor younger players.
Freeman started 19 games during the 13-19 season, and has 40
starts in 86 career games. He must sit out next season to satisfy
NCAA transfer requirements, then has just one season remaining.
