Kansas Jayhawks guard Brady Morningstar apologized to fans Thursday for his recent arrest on suspicion of drunken driving.

Morningstar handed out his prepared statement to reporters at a news conference for teammates Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins, who were named the preseason players of the year in the Big 12 on Thursday.

Morningstar, who was arrested early the morning of Oct. 3, said he used "extremely poor judgment in driving after drinking." Coach Bill Self has suspended the 23-year-old junior for the first semester for violating strict team rules. He will not be allowed to play in games or travel with the team.

Morningstar did not take questions.

"I know the consequences of my poor and embarrassing decisions and want to apologize," the statement said. "Every day in practice, coach Self and our coach staff talk to us about the importance of making good decisions whether on the court of off. I sincerely regret the 'black eye' I have given to all of you who have supported me, the University, and especially Kansas basketball."

Morningstar's arrest was the latest embarrassment for the Jayhawks, who are expected to be ranked as high as No. 1 in the preseason poll. It comes as university police open an investigation into last month's brawl involving members of the school's football and men's basketball teams.
