Holy Cross has fired head basketball coach Sean Kearney after just one season, athletic director Dick Regan said.

"It was a disappointing year," Regan said. "We were picked to finish first in the league. We went from the championship game to 5-9 in the league. It was a disappointing year."

Regan said he assessed the situation and decided that with a host of returning players that it was best to make a move now. Regan said he was likely looking for a head coach, rather than promoting from the current staff.

Kearney, who was brought in after Ralph Willard left to join Rick Pitino's staff at Louisville, went just 9-22 in his one season at the helm and lost to Lafayette in the Patriot League semifinals.

This was the first collegiate head coaching job for Kearney, who had served as an associate coach at Notre Dame for nine seasons prior to coming to Holy Cross.
