Vermont's Blakely leaps over field
INDIANAPOLIS -- Vermont's Marqus Blakely beat Bradley's Chris Roberts in the college slam dunk contest Thursday night.
Roberts had a 50 and a 47½ in the first round and 44½ in the semifinals before running into trouble in the finals. He misfired on three attempts, including a between-the-legs dunk, before he received a 40 for his one-handed power dunk with time running out.
Blakely then ended it with a 41. He had L.D. Williams stand in the lane about 5 feet from the basket and toss the ball off the glass, then hurdled the Wake Forest guard during his two-handed dunk.
Maryland's Eric Hayes won the men's 3-point contest, hitting his last shot to beat Ryan Wittman of Cornell 17-15 in the final.
Detroit's Brigid Mulroy beat Notre Dame's Ashley Barlow 16-11 in the women's 3-point final. Hayes then beat Mulroy 22-21.
