V Foundation gets record donations
BRISTOL, Conn. -- ESPN's fourth annual Jimmy V Week brought in a record $1.2 million in donations to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, the network said Thursday.
Nick Valvano, the chief executive officer of The V Foundation and the late coach's brother, and George Bodenheimer, the president of ESPN and ABC Sports, made the announcement.
The money raised during the Dec. 1-7 drive was a 30-percent increase from 2009's $950,000. In the four years Jimmy V Week has been held, $3.8 million has been raised.
The week began with Jim Valvano's 1993 ESPYs speech featuring the now-famous line, "Don't give up. Don't ever give up."
The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 and has raised more than $100 million.
