Miami officials met with Harvard coach Tommy Amaker in Boston earlier in the week, but Amaker decided to stay in Cambridge.
Miami hired Wisconsin associate athletic director Shawn Eichorst earlier in the week as its AD, and he has taken over the search after it was originally led by the Parker search firm out of Atlanta. Eichorst wasn't at Wisconsin when Jeter worked under Bo Ryan, but the two are familiar with each other from their time in the Wisconsin State University Conference.
Jeter led Milwaukee to a three-way tie for the Horizon League title with Butler and Valparaiso. Milwaukee beat Butler twice in the regular season but lost to the Bulldogs in the Horizon tournament title game at home for the league's automatic berth. Milwaukee then played in the NIT first round and finished 19-14.
Jeter has been the coach at Milwaukee since the 2005-06 season. He coached the Panthers to the NCAA tournament in his first season in the job.
Miami hasn't reached out to Kansas State coach Frank Martin, according to multiple sources, even though Martin has said he would listen to a prospective offer to return to his native Miami.
Miami formally contacted Milwaukee coach Rob Jeter about its men's basketball coaching opening Friday to gauge his interest in the position with a potential face-to-face meeting next week, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation.
