Defendant in USD case posts bond

SAN DIEGO -- A man accused of participating in a sports betting business to affect the outcome of basketball games at the University of San Diego has been granted release from federal prison once his bond paperwork is completed.

The San Diego Union-Tribune says Richard Garmo appeared in court Monday with his family, who said they were willing to put up their home in order for him to be freed pending trial on $40,000 bond.

The 42-year-old Garmo was described in an indictment as one of three money men who were involved in a sports bribery scheme.

USD's all-time leading scorer, Brandon Johnson, also faces charges, as well as Thaddeus Brown, an assistant coach at the school in the 2006-07 season.
