Indiana rolls over Michigan State
Indiana Beats Michigan State
By Andy KatzESPN.com BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Maybe Kelvin Sampson is in denial. Maybe he truly believes he'll be coaching Indiana for the rest of the season. That may be the only way to explain the bizarre nature of what is happening here. Indiana rocked Michigan State 80-61 Saturday night at Assembly Hall despite losing potential Big Ten player of the year D.J. White with a left knee injury after only 15 minutes of game action. "I think basketball is so much bigger than one person," said Sampson of his own tenuous situation. "The game will always be about the players. I am happy for them. That was a tough loss the other night [to Wisconsin on a Brian Butch 3-pointer on the Badgers' final possession]. I mean it was. But to come back tonight, it is just a great win for those kids. You just can't go anywhere and people not see the situation." For all of Andy Katz's column, click here.
Stanford holds off Arizona in Pac-10 play
Expert's Take
By Doug GottliebESPN • Cal finally defended with consistency to get a 76-73 win at Arizona State. Cal's Ryan Anderson was spectacular as always, with 28 points and 11 rebounds to continue on his unreal sophomore run. Patrick Christopher had a sick dunk in the second half on ASU freshman Ty Abbott, which energized the Bears in the second half. • Drake used a huge 13-2 run to beat Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls to win its first conference title since 1971. Drake uses the entire half court to spread the floor for Adam Emmenecker to penetrate and create as the shot clock wears down. The Bulldogs do run some flex, a la Keno Davis' mentor/father Dr. Tom, but they also use some simple motion with double screens on the weak side to keep the spacing on the floor. • How much is home-court advantage worth? UNLV beat BYU 70-41 in Las Vegas on Jan. 15. On Saturday, BYU beat UNLV 74-48 in Provo. Can you imagine a bigger differential? UNLV's Wink Adams was once again shut down by BYU's guards and UNLV struggled all night with BYU's Trent Plaisted inside. The lefty had 22 points and used his quick jump hook and face-up game to destroy the Rebels. • Why is Oklahoma State playing so much better? Former McDonald's All-American Byron Eaton has been playing very well. With OSU's 59-54 win at Texas A&M, coach Sean Sutton got his first road win in 20 games and Eaton completely controlled the pace and tempo for the second straight game. The junior had 17 points and five assists mostly off ball screens that Texas A&M defended very poorly.

Texas Holds Off Baylor Rally
By Tim GriffinESPN.com WACO, Texas -- The most excruciating look near the Texas bench didn't belong to Rick Barnes or any of his Longhorns players. As Texas nearly frittered away a 14-point lead in the final three minutes of its game Saturday night against Baylor, the gangly teenager in the Pittsburgh Pirates hat behind the bench took its late-game collapse the hardest. That tall, skinny fan was Kevin Durant, only a year removed from earning national player of the year honors with the Longhorns. So it was understandable that Durant was showing more emotion as a spectator than during most games with the Seattle SuperSonics this season. "That one was a hard one to watch," said Durant, who arrived shortly before tip-off and planned to make the 80-mile bus trip back to Austin with his former teammates after the game. "But I was proud that the guys hung on and won. It was good to see them do well." For Tim Griffin's Instant Analysis of the Texas-Baylor game, click here.
