COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) -- Eleven letterwinners return for No. 16 Maryland's opener vs. Jackson State on Friday - the first meeting between the two schools.

Terrapins' coach Gary Williams guided a young team to the NCAA Tournament last season, extending the school's record for tournament berths to 11.

It may have been his best coaching job with the program despite an exit in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Sitting at 14-11 and just 5-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference as February ended, Maryland was on the verge of having its tournament streak end.

But it put together two victories to close out the regular season and then knocked off the top three seeds on successive days to win the ACC tournament for the first time since 1984.

Williams' youthful unit gained valuable experience during the late run last season and are now primed for a return atop the ACC standings.

John Gilchrist led the team in scoring, rebounds and assists last season and was named to numerous preseason lists. He was one of five Terrapins to score in double figures through the team's two exhibition wins.

Chris McCray led the way with 15.5 points per game and Ekene Ibekwe chipped in 15.0. Fellow starters Travis Garrison and Nik Caner-Medley also finished in double figures through the exhibition slate, combining for 25.5 points per game.

Jackson State finished last season 12-17 and also won both preseason games. Antonio Williams-Parker scored 14 points in a 62-51 victory over Spring Hill College on November 9 and Ernest Hassell scored 24 as the Tigers topped VASDA, 97-74, on November 12.

Maryland is 9-0 in home openers and 101-2 at home against non-conference opponents under Williams.
