Shorthanded Texas looks to bounce back against Texas State

Texas State (1-7) at No. 15 Texas (8-2) 8:00 pm EST

AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- No. 15 Texas is prepared to be without Daniel Gibson and Brad Buckman when it tries to snap out of a troubling slump against Texas State on Thursday.

After winning their first eight games by an average of 26.9 points, the Longhorns have fallen on hard times, losing to top-ranked Duke by 31 and suffering an even more embarrassing 95-78 setback to unranked Tennessee at home Saturday.

Playing without senior forward Brad Buckman, who injured his calf in the loss to the Blue Devils, Texas suffered another blow when Gibson left Saturday's contest with a concussion.

Both are doubtful for Thursday's game and reserves Mike Williams and J.D. Lewis also are battling injuries. In addition, sophomore swingman Dion Dowell, who played 14 minutes Saturday, has elected to transfer, leaving coach Rick Barnes with a limited rotation.

In Saturday's loss, P.J. Tucker scored 20 points and freshman A.J. Abrams added 19, but the Longhorns had no answer defensively and were booed by their home fans just weeks after rolling to one of the best start's in program history.

Texas State should provide a chance for Texas to get back on track before a brutal January schedule that features two Top-5 teams and the start of Big 12 Conference play.

The Bobcats snapped a seven-game slide to start the season by edging Texas-Pan American, 58-57, on December 15. Jushay Rockett's jumper with 38 seconds left finished Texas State's comeback and Trevor Cook finished with a team-high 17 points.

The Longhorns lead the all-time series, 2-1, including a 95-70 victory in last season's Maui Invitational.
