Kentucky looks to continue momentum from big win

Iona (7-0) at No. 20 Kentucky (7-3) 7:00 pm EST

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Rajon Rondo and Kentucky continued their success against Louisville on Saturday. Now they will play on their bitter rival's home court.

Rondo will try to keep the good times rolling when the 20th-ranked Wildcats face Iona in their 70th all-time game in Freedom Hall.

Traditionally, Kentucky has played at least one non-conference opponent in Louisville since 1908. It has won 22 of the last 25 of those matchups, including 15 in a row.

Last Saturday, Kentucky halted the 6-0 start by Louisville with a commanding 73-61 victory, its second straight victory in the intrastate series and 15th since the matchup became an annual event in 1983-84.

Claiming their first win over a team ranked in the Top 5 since beating then-No. 3 Florida on March 8, 2003, the Wildcats snapped a string of two losses in their previous three games. After falling to unranked North Carolina at home on December 3, Kentucky was routed by Indiana the following Saturday.

After being forced to sit out of a win over Georgia State on December 6 with strep throat, Rondo scored a career-high 25 points and handed out seven assists in the win over Louisville.

Quickly becoming one of the top all-around players in the nation, Rondo leads the club in scoring (16.6), rebounding (9.1) and assists (5.3).

The Gaels are off to a 7-0 start for the first time since 1984-85. Among the early victims was then-ranked Iowa State, which fell 89-72 in the Cyclone Challenge on November 26.

Senior guard Steve Burtt in the team's leading scorer, averaging 24.9 points on 42.5 percent shooting (54-of-127). He scored 28 points in Iona's latest win, a 79-76 victory over Marist on December 11.

Justin Marshall hit a 3-pointer from the right side of the key with 40 seconds left to extend the Gaels' unbeaten start.

This will be the sixth all-time meeting with Kentucky. Iona has lost all five, including a 106-79 setback in 1995-96.
