BOISE, Idaho (Ticker) -- Top-seeded Washington hopes to
advance past the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the
first time since 1998 when it squares off with eighth-seeded
Pacific in the Albuquerque Region on Saturday.
A No. 1 seed for the first time school history, the Huskies are
in the second round for the first time since reaching the Sweet
16 seven years ago.
On Thursday, Washington never trailed in disposing of
16th-seeded Montana, 88-77. The Huskies scored the first 11
points of the contest and led 26-7 a little more than eight
minutes into the contest.
Brandon Roy scored 17 points off the bench and
Nate Robinson
added 15 for the Huskies.
Bobby Jones had a solid all-around
game, collecting 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals in
just 20 minutes.
Pacific, the Big West regular-season champion, has reached the
second round of the tournament for the second straight year.
After ousting Providence last season, the Tigers toppled another
Big East foe on Thursday, eliminating Pittsburgh, 79-71.
Pacific never has advanced past the second round.
Big West Player of the Year David Doubley and
Christian Maraker
scored 17 points apiece against the Panthers and
Mike Webb
added a career-high 15 off the bench on 5-of-8 shooting from the
arc.
The winner of Saturday's game takes on either No. 5 Georgia Tech
- last year's runner-up - or No. 4 Louisville in the regional
semifinals.
