INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kentucky's second opponent in the NCAA
Tournament is just a little farther away from Lexington than its
first opponent.
The second-seeded Wildcats take on seventh-seeded Cincinnati in
a second-round matchup in the Austin Region on Saturday.
Although separated by roughly 90 miles, Kentucky and Cincinnati
have played just five times since 1947. The Wildcats have won
the last 14 meetings and lead the all-time series, 26-11.
Playing in its 14th consecutive tournament, Kentucky disposed of
Eastern Kentucky, located 30 miles from the Wildcats' campus,
72-64, on Thursday.
Chuck Hayes and
Kelenna Azubuike scored 16 points apiece and
helped offset a late charge by the Colonels, who got within five
points with 2:13 remaining. Kentucky committed 14 turnovers
and made 2-of-11 3-pointers.
Kentucky is 37-9 in NCAA first-round games and is attempting to
reach the Sweet 16 for the 11th time since 1992.
Cincinnati won a first-round game for the 10th time in 11 years
with a 76-64 victory over Iowa on Thursday.
Jason Maxiell, a 6-7, 250-pound senior, scored 22 points,
grabbed nine rebounds, blocked six shots and made the first two
3-pointers of his career.
The Bearcats, who broke open the game with a 21-3 run in the
first half, need two more blocks to surpass the single-season
school record of 223, set in 2000.
Cincinnati can reach its 10th Sweet 16 overall and fifth in the
last 15 years. A win will give coach Bob Huggins his 400th
victory in 16th seasons with the Bearcats.
