Maryland eyes perfect homestand before conference play

Tx AM Corp Chr (10-4) at No. 12 Maryland (10-2) 8:00 pm EST

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) -- No. 12 Maryland has a final tune-up before Atlantic Coast Conference play picks up when it hosts Texas AM-Corpus Christi on Wednesday.

The Terrapins have an early edge in league play due to their 73-71 win over then-No. 6 Boston College on December 11. That win started the club's current homestand, which would finish 5-0 with a victory Wednesday.

Maryland, which has won 28 straight home games against non-conference opponents, stayed perfect at home this season with Saturday's 99-68 victory over Virginia Military Institute, the club's best offensive output this season.

D.J. Strawberry scored 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting and Chris McCray had 15 to extend his streak of double-digit efforts to 14 games, dating to last season.

The Terrapins shot 56 percent (40-of-71) from the floor and got a big boost from junior transfer Parrish Brown, who scored a season-high 13 points and made 3-of-4 3-pointers off the bench.

The rout enabled coach Gary Williams to pull within four wins of matching Lefty Driesell's school record of 348. Maryland is 115-2 under Williams against non-conference teams at home.

The Islanders will need to have a strong start Wednesday as the Terrapins have outscored their last three opponents, 135-50, in the first half. Texas AM-CC has won four straight games, scoring at least 90 in the last three.

Richard Mintz scored seven of his 13 points in overtime and Chris Daniels finished with 17 in the Islanders' 91-83 win over Texas-San Antonio on Monday, capping a 3-0 homestand.

Wednesday marks the first meeting between the teams. Maryland plays at Miami in an ACC game on Saturday.
