Gay, UConn hope to rebound from first loss of season

LSU (8-4) at No. 2 Connecticut (11-1) 4:00 pm EST

STORRS, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Rudy Gay and No. 2 Connecticut look to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they host Louisiana State on Saturday.

After opening the campaign with 11 consecutive victories, the Huskies dropped a surprising 94-79 decision to unranked Marquette in the Big East Conference opener for both schools.

After jumping out to an early lead, UConn looked lost on the offensive end. The Huskies shot just 38 percent (27-of-71) while going 17-of-34 from the free-throw line.

Gay particularly struggled, scoring just eight points on 3-of-12 shooting while committing five turnovers in 29 minutes. Arguably the most athletic player to come through UConn's program, Gay has been battling a sprained ankle over the past two weeks.

The Huskies hope Gay will be back to full strength Saturday when they take on a Tigers squad which has won just two of its last five games.

After closing 2005 with a 78-76 loss at No. 21 Ohio State on December 31, LSU posted a 75-58 triumph over Tulane on Tuesday.

Freshman Tyrus Thomas collected 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocks and Glen Davis added 10 and 10, as LSU held Tulane to just 32 percent (19-of-59) shooting.
