George Mason meets Wichita State in unlikely NCAA matchup

No. 11 George Mason (25-7) vs. No. 7 Wichita State (26-8) 7:27 pm EST

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Ticker) -- Few, if any fans would have had George Mason or Wichita State winning as many as three NCAA Tournament games when the competition began.

The seventh-seeded Shockers play their first regional semifinal since 1981 on Friday when they meet No. 7 George Mason in the Washington, D.C. Region.

One of four Missouri Valley Conference teams selected for the "Big Dance," Wichita State has rebounded from a loss to Bradley in the MVC tournament to put together eye-opening wins against teams from two of the nation's top leagues.

After Thursday's 20-point triumph over Seton Hall, Wichita State shot 67 percent (14-of-21) from the floor in the second half of Saturday's 80-73 win over Tennessee. P.J. Cousinard scored 20 points and Kyle Wilson added 17 for the Shockers.

George Mason is making its first appearance in the "Sweet 16" after the first two NCAA Tournament victories in school history and its first win over an Atlantic Coast Conference foe in 18 tries.

The Patriots, who limit their opponents to a school-record 59.1 points, have won 25 games for the first time and advanced to the regional semifinals after ousting two former tournament champions.

Following Friday's triumph over Michigan State, George Mason got 18 points from Lamar Butler and 15 from Folarin Campbell in Sunday's 65-60 victory over defending champion North Carolina.

Tony Skinn scored 23 points and the Patriots shot 52 percent (26-of-50) to record a 70-67 win over the Shockers on February 18 in a "Bracket Buster" game.

The winner of this game plays either Connecticut or Washington on Sunday.
