LSU hopes Thomas can return vs. Iona

Iona (23-7) vs. LSU (23-8) 7:10 pm EST

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Ticker) - Louisiana State played its last four games without the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year. That proved costly in its most recent outing.

Tyrus Thomas is expected to return to the lineup for the fourth-seeded Tigers on Thursday when they face 13th-seeded Iona in a first-round game in the Atlanta Region.

A 6-9 forward, Thomas averaged 12.7 points and 9.3 rebounds while shooting nearly 60 percent (131-of-219) from the floor. However, he has not played since suffering a high ankle sprain against Kentucky on February 25.

Despite winning 14 of 16 SEC games to win the regular-season title, LSU (23-8) suffered a 81-65 loss to Florida in the conference tournament semifinals on Saturday. Darrel Mitchell scored 21 points and Tasmin Mitchell added 20 for the Tigers, who are making their 19th NCAA Tournament appearance. LSU lost to UAB in the first round last year.

Iona (23-7) won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament to reach the "Big Dance" for the eighth time in school history and first since losing to Mississippi State in the first round in 2001.

Steve Burtt scored 28 points and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for the Gaels, who registered an 80-61 victory over St. Peter's in the final.

The nation's sixth-leading scorer at 25.2 points per game, Burtt became the second player in school history to top 2,000 career points. His father, also named Steve, is Iona's all-time leader with 2,534 points.
