LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Michael Kuebler scored 21 points to lead Hawaii
past UNLV 85-68 in the first round of the Owens Corning National Invitational
Tournament on Wednesday night.
Kuebler, who scored 19 first-half points, was 8-of-9 from the
field in that half. Also for the Rainbow Warriors (19-11), Carl
English added 20 points, six rebounds and five assists.
For the game, Hawaii shot 29-of-52 from the field for 55.8
percent.
For UNLV (21-11), Marcus Banks led with 22 points ad seven
rebounds. Dalron Johnson added 18 points as the Rebels were
27-of-61 from the field for 44.3 percent.
The Rainbow Warriors took a 10-8 lead with 14:15 until halftime
and never trailed again after the Rebels once held a 6-2 advantage.
After Hawaii led 25-22 with 8:07 left, the Rainbow Warriors went on
a 10-0 run and eventually led 48-33 at halftime.
In the first half, Hawaii was 21-of-30 from the field for 70
percent, while the Rebels were 13-of-33 for 39.4 percent.
UNLV started the second half with a 10-0 run, but got no closer.
The Rainbow Warriors would eventually stretch their lead to 69-50,
their largest lead, with 8:30 left.
Hawaii now plays Minnesota in the second round either next
Monday or Tuesday at a site to be determined.
