LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) -- Keith Waleskowski had 17 points and 13
rebounds and Dayton dominated inside in an 82-63 victory over
Central Michigan on Monday in the opening round of the EA Sports Maui
Invitational.
The Flyers (2-0) will play
San Diego State, which beat
Ohio State 83-61, in Tuesday's semifinals.
In its last appearance in this tournament in 2000, Dayton beat
Connecticut in the first round, lost to Arizona in the semifinals
and defeated Maryland in the third-place game.
Kevin Nelson had 17 points for the Chippewas (0-1), who sorely
missed 7-footer Chris Kaman who left after his junior season for
the NBA draft.
All five Dayton starters scored in double figures and the Flyers
finished with a 43-31 rebound advantage and blocked seven shots.
Dayton used a 15-0 run to take a 24-8 lead midway through the
first half. Central Michigan, which didn't score for 7½ minutes as
the Flyers took control, trailed 35-23 at halftime.
Nelson and
Robert Sevalia combined for five 3-pointers when the
Chippewas made a run to get to 55-49 with 10:04 to play. But Dayton
established its inside game again and went on a 13-3 run to go up
68-52 with 6:07 left.
Monty Scott's 3-pointer with 2:52 left gave the Flyers their
biggest lead of the game, 76-54.
Sean Finn and
Mark Jones each had 13 points for Dayton, which
shot 27-for-54 from the field, while Scott and
Ramod Marshall each
added 11. The Flyers were 20-for-25 from the free-throw line, while
the Chippewas were 7-for-8.
Sevalia finished with 10 points for Central Michigan, which shot
34 percent overall (23-for-66), including 10-for-29 from 3-point
range.
