    ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- Robert Merritt's 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds left lifted Samford to a 66-64 win over Winthrop in the Brother's Air & Heat Shootout on Friday night.

    Samford (2-2) advances to the final round to face Southern Miss (3-1), which beat Hampton (1-6) on Friday.

    Winthrop (3-2) trailed by eight points with less than eight minutes to play but fought back with a 11-2 run. Ivan Jenkins' 16-foot jumper put the Eagles ahead 59-58.

    Samford answered with a 3-pointer from Merritt, who hit 3-of-6 3-pointers, pulled down six rebounds and finished with 13 points. Eddie Harper and Tyson Dorsey led the Bulldogs with 14 points. Harper pulled down six rebounds and Dorsey had five. Phillip Ramelli added 10 points and five rebounds.

    Tyrone Walker scored 13 points to lead the Eagles and Josh Grant added 10.

    It is the third straight year Winthrop didn't make the championship game of its tournament.
