    New Mexico State 70, North Texas 67

    DENTON, Texas (AP) -- Duane John scored 19 points to lead five double-digit scorers as New Mexico State held off North Texas 70-67 in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams.

    John scored 11 points during a 13-0 second-half run as New Mexico State (7-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) broke open a tight game and took a 52-40 lead Saturday night.

    It was the first win ever for the Aggies in Denton and the first since 2000-01 in a conference opener.

    North Texas (5-8, 0-1) pulled to within 70-67 on Leonard Hopkins' 3-pointer with 4 seconds left but never got another shot.

    James Felder had 13 points and 10 rebounds for New Mexico State, and Kelsey Crooks added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Gary Jackson scored 11 points and James Moore had 10.

    Shawnson Johnson scored 20 points to lead North Texas, which had held a 36-34 edge at halftime.

    The Aggies play next at 7:05 p.m. Thursday -- their first home game in three weeks.
