Graham's 21 points, 10 rebounds lead way

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The last time a visiting team won in Austin, Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton got a ride off the court from his players after notching his 700th career victory.

Nearly two years later, Sutton got career win No. 738 after Joey Graham had 21 points and 10 rebounds Saturday to lead the Cowboys (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) past Texas (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 16 AP) 72-67.

The victory snapped Texas' 25-game winning streak at the Frank Erwin Center, where the Longhorns hadn't lost since Feb. 20, 2002.

Sutton walked off the court this time without a milestone but with a key Big 12 road win in hand.

"I thought Texas was playing as well as anybody in the league at this point," Sutton said. "It was a very big win for us."

Graham did it all for the Cowboys (14-2, 4-1), who outrebounded Texas 38-30 and converted 16 of 22 free throws to help maintain a lead late in the second half. Graham had three rim-rattling dunks while shooting 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

"I'm just a big-time player," said Graham, who came in averaging 9.8 points with a season high of 15.

"Coach told us this was going to be a big road game and I took it upon myself to come in and play hard," Graham said.

"They have some big country boys, Texas. They're pretty big down there. If we can rebound with the best of them, we'll always have a great chance."

Royal Ivey scored 14 points for Texas (12-3, 3-1), which missed half of its 20 free throws. Texas was 2-of-9 from the line over the last 4 minutes as the Longhorns tried to erase a 10-point deficit.

"The surefire way to lose a basketball game is to miss free throws, not rebound and have defensive breakdowns," coach Rick Barnes said.

Ivey, who had come up with the big shots in Texas' previous two wins over Nebraska and Missouri, went 4-of-10 from the free throw line.

John Lucas scored 13 points and Daniel Bobik added 12 for the Cowboys.

James Thomas came off the bench to get 13 points and nine rebounds for Texas, which got its best offensive production in the low post against the smaller Cowboys.

The Longhorns had closed a 60-49 Oklahoma State lead to 68-66 on Kenny Taylor's 3-pointer with 1:35 to play. Graham missed a short jumper to extend the lead but Terrance Crawford grabbed the rebound for another Cowboys possession.

After a timeout, Texas appeared to have the Cowboys guard John Lucas trapped near midcourt as the shot clock wound down. But Lucas fired a bullet pass to Crawford who had slipped behind the defense for an easy layup to stretch the lead to 70-66 with 27 seconds left.

"I remember turning around and seeing him laying it up," said Longhorns forward Jason Klotz, who had moved out from under the basket. "It hurt."

Ivey got to the line but missed the second of two free throws and went 1-of-4 over the final 22 seconds. After Bobik hit a final free throw for OSU, Ivey took it the length of the court but his layup at the buzzer was blocked into the crowd by Tony Allen.

"We were ready," Ivey said. "We just had missed free throws and clutch rebounds we didn't get."

The matchup of the Big 12's highest scoring teams played at a frenetic pace over the first 10 minutes before eventually grinding down. The Cowboys led 16-8 after the second of Graham's dunks before Ivey broke the OSU run with a steal and layup.

Texas led 35-32 at halftime. Graham tied it at 35 with his third dunk 24 seconds into the second half and his three-point play made it 46-42 with 13:38 to play.

Graham made two free throws to start a 10-1 run that included a 3-pointer from Bobik and stretched the lead to 60-49 before Texas gradually mounted a comeback.
