1/28/2004

WASHINGTON (AP) -- George Washington handed a crushing 81-60
defeat to Atlantic 10 rival Xavier tonight, remaining unbeaten at
home this season with a perfect 8-0 record at the Charles E. Smith
Center.

The Colonials high-flying Pops Mensah-Bonsu tallied 14 points
and 8 rebounds, thrilling the rowdy home crowd with dunk after
dunk. George Washington dominated inside, outscoring Xavier 48-28
in the paint, including 19 fast-break points. The Colonials
outrebounded Xavier 40 to 30.

George Washington (11-7, 5-2) quickly turned a hotly contested
game into a rout in the second half, after a 12-0 run with 12
minutes remaining and seemed to take the fight out of Xavier.
George Washington ended the game with four players in double
figures - Mensah-Bonsu, Mike Hall, Carl Elliot, and T.J. Thompson,
who led the Colonials with 19 points.

The stifling Colonials defense held Xavier standout Romain Sato
to only 6 points in the first half. Sato, who has averaged 18
points per game for the last 10 games, finished with 9 points in 38
minutes of play. He looked out of sorts in the second half, missing
shots, turning the ball over and not managing to score until 2:50
remained, with the game out of reach for Xavier.

Xavier's shooting failed for the second game in a row with the
Musketeers shooting only 35 percent for the game, managing only 30
points each half. Lionel Chalmers led the Musketeers in scoring
with 21 points, and Sato brought down 13 rebounds. Xavier (10-8,
2-4) has now lost four of its last five games.
