SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Brice Vounang had 26 points and Brandon Gay had
18 points and 10 rebounds as San Diego snapped a school record
11-game losing streak with a 74-71 win over Santa Clara Saturday
night.
The Toreros (4-19, 1-7 West Coast Conference) won for the first
time since Dec. 23, when they beat Division 2 UC San Diego.
Kyle Bailey led Santa Clara (13-11, 5-4) with 26 points, hitting
six of 13 shots from 3-point range.
Doron Perkins added 19 points,
including a four-point play with just five seconds left that
brought Santa Clara to within two points at 73-71.
San Diego's
Brett Melton then hit one of two free throws with
3.9 seconds left.
Bailey got off a three that would have tied the game but was
wide of the rim.
Santa Clara led 53-46 with 8:24 left in the game. But with
Vounang taking control down low and Gay hitting from the outside,
San Diego went on a 21-4 run to take a 67-57 lead with 2:08 left in
the game.
Santa Clara battled back with Bailey scoring 10 of his 26 points
in the final 1:37, but the Toreros held on.
San Diego had a 32-27 lead at the half, but Santa Clara went on
a 13-2 run to start the second half with Bailey scoring 10 straight
points for the Broncos.
