Memphis 89, Marquette 71

2/14/2004

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Sean Banks scored 28 points as Memphis defeated
Marquette 89-71 Saturday night and extended its winning streak to
nine.

The Tigers (18-4, 9-2 Conference USA) were 16-of-31 from behind
the arc -- breaking the team's record of 15 3-pointers set Jan. 3,
2001, against Howard.

Banks, a freshman, made 6-of-7 attempts from 3-point range,
while Anthony Rice hit 5-of-9 and scored 17 points. Jeremy Hunt
added 16.

Steve Novak scored 16 points to lead Marquette, while guard
Travis Diener added 15.

The Golden Eagles (13-8, 4-6) have lost three games in a row and
six of their last eight. They are 0-7 this season and 2-15 in coach
Tom Crean's career at Marquette when their opponent scores at least
80. Memphis' 89 points were the most Marquette has given up this
season.

The win moves Memphis a half-game ahead of Cincinnati to lead
Conference USA. The Bearcats play Sunday at Wake Forest in a
non-conference game.

Memphis was 10 of 18 from behind the arc in the first half,
including making eight in a row without a two-point field goal in a
8:28 stretch. Banks made 5-of-6 3-point attempts in the first half
and scored 15 points.

After Diener tied the score at 20 with 10:24 remaining in the
first half, Memphis went on a 20-8 run to take a 40-28 lead at
halftime. Marquette had just one field goal during that time.

Marquette failed to come within 10 points in the second half.
