OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Nate Johnson made a running layup with 11
seconds left to give Nebraska a 71-70 victory Tuesday night over
Creighton in the opening round of the NIT.
Johnson's shot capped the Cornhuskers' comeback from a
five-point deficit in the final two minutes.
Nebraska (17-12) advances to play the winner of Wednesday's game
between Troy State and Niagara. The game will be in Lincoln on
Friday.
Jake Muhleisen led the Huskers with 17 points and Johnson added
11 points.
Creighton (20-9) got 16 points from
Joe Dabbert, 15 from Johnny
Mathies and 13 from
Nate Funk.
The Bluejays led 68-63, but Johnson trimmed the lead to 68-65
with 1:41 left.
Johnson stole the ball after Dabbert made a bad pass on
Creighton's ensuing possession, and
John Turek hit a short shot to
pull the Huskers to 68-67.
Mathies' two free throws gave the Bluejays a three-point lead,
but Turek came right back to dunk Muhleisen's miss. That gave
Huskers a 70-69 lead with 42 seconds left.
The Bluejays lost the ball after Mathies missed a desperation
jumper as the shot clock expired, giving Nebraska possession with
22 seconds to play.
Johnson brought the ball down the floor and banked in the
winning shot.
The Bluejays were slow to bring the ball up the court on their
final possession, and Funk was well short with a final shot from
the top of the key.
Creighton had won the regular-season meeting between the teams
61-54 on Dec. 10.
