MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Maybe a team can play too hard on defense.
Air Force defeated Mississippi 60-36 Monday night in the second
round of the Black Coaches Association Classic with the help of a
huge advantage in free throws.
Air Force (2-0) was 18 of 29 from the line to just 5 of 8 for
the Rebels, who were whistled for 26 fouls.
"I thought their physical play led to a lot of fouls," said
Nick Welch, who scored 14 points for Air Force, including five free
throws in 10 tries.
Mississippi coach Rod Barnes acknowledged that his team plays
hard to stop the other team from scoring -- which can lead to more
fouls.
"That's the way we've been playing for seven years. Maybe
that's what it was," he said.
Antoine Hood scored 15 points and
Matt McCraw 11 for Air Force,
which won in the winner's bracket on the second day of the
tournament. Eight teams are playing three days in a row through
Tuesday.
Mississippi (1-1) was led by
Todd Abernethy with 12 points.
McCraw had a three-point play and Welch a 3-pointer, as the
Falcons broke from a halftime tie to a 25-19 lead, pulling ahead
for good.
Abernethy hit a 3-pointer for Ole Miss to make it 25-22, but Air
Force scored four straight points on free throws and the Rebels
never got that close again.
Air Force coach Chris Mooney said it was "terrific" to beat a
team from the Southeastern Conference, but he wasn't happy about
how many free throws his players missed.
"I think we need to shoot a little better from the line," he
said.
Abernethy credited the Air Force for causing his team's weak
offensive showing.
"It was tough tonight. They switch a lot on defense and we
couldn't penetrate, didn't get good shots and didn't put the ball
in the basket," he said.
