    Brewington: Career-best 21 points

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Dwight Brewington went 5-for-5 from 3-point range and scored a career-high 21 points Thursday night, leading Providence to an 89-52 win over Pennsylvania in the second round of the Preseason NIT.

Ryan Gomes, who finished with 10 points and a career-high eight assists, hit a pair of 3-pointers 29 seconds apart during an 18-2 run midway through the first half as the Friars (2-0) broke the game open.

Providence plays No. 2 Wake Forest in the semifinals on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

Gerald Brown had 12 points and Donnie McGrath 10 for the Friars, who shot 65.5 percent (36-of-55) in the game. Providence was 11-of-17 on 3-point attempts.

Jan Fikiel led the Quakers (1-1) with 13 points. Penn, overmatched by Providence's quickness, shot just 34.5 percent (10-of-29) in the first half.

Brewington scored 19 in the NIT opening-round win over Niagara on Tuesday.

The Friars, who hit 20-of-31 shots in the first half, took a 46-25 halftime lead.

Providence, which never trailed, went on its 18-2 run over a 4:55 stretch, pulling to a 25-9 lead. Gomes, the Big East's preseason player of the year, had seven points in the run.

Penn never got the lead below double-digits the rest of the way.

The Friars went on a 21-4 run in the second half to pull to a 78-39 lead with just over 10 minutes left, their largest lead of the game.
