EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Kevin Steenberge scored a
career-best 30 points Friday night to lead Richmond to a 77-71 win
over Seton Hall in the season opener for both teams at the
Continental Airlines Arena.
Steenberge, a junior center who had never before scored more
than 12 points, was 11-for-13 from the field and 8-of-13 from the
line.
Daon Merritt had 19 points for Richmond, including the go-ahead
free throw with 44 seconds remaining.
Jermaine Bucknor added 12
points and nine rebounds.
Kelly Whitney paced Seton Hall with 21
points.
Richmond, which had not led since scoring the first basket of
the game, rallied for take a 52-51 lead with 10:08 remaining when
Bucknor hit a 3-pointer.
Richmond maintained the advantage until Whitney hit one-of-two
free throws to pull Seton Hall even at 68 with 1:47 left.
The teams swapped 3-point plays with Merritt giving Richmond a
71-68 lead before
John Allen countered for Seton Hall with 1:07
remaining.
That set the stage for Merritt to give Richmond the lead with by
missing the first but making the second of two free throws.
