MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin's Clayton Hanson and Zach Morley
made UC Santa Barbara pay for leaving them open Tuesday night.
Hanson scored a career-high 18 points, and he and Morley had
four 3-pointers apiece in the Badgers' (No. 17 ESPN/USA Today, No. 20 AP) 72-61 victory over
the Gauchos.Morley, who finished with 14 points, hit four 3-pointers in the
first half, and Hanson added four more in the second half as
Wisconsin won its 30th straight at home."I just wonder maybe at halftime if they had a raffle to see
who got to come out the second half and knock down four 3s," said
UC Santa Barbara coach Bob Williams.Alando Tucker added 16 points for Wisconsin (2-0), while Casey
Cook scored 21 points to lead the Gauchos (1-1). Tucker's work in
the paint helped open up things on the outside for Morley and
Hanson."Coming in, we knew they were going to double in the post,"
Morley said. "They did that and we just tried to find open spots
in that zone."Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan was impressed with the way his team
looked for and found the open man. Nine players combined for the
Badgers' 17 assists."That was a result of guys using ball fakes," he said. "The
credit goes to the other four jerseys."Wisconsin was 8-of-18 from 3-point range for the game and is
shooting 50 percent (16-of-32) from behind the arc in its first two
games.UC Santa Barbara, which trailed by as many as 17 points in the
second half, used an 18-8 run to pull within 63-56 with 4:27
remaining.But Hanson responded with his fourth 3-pointer of the half to
push Wisconsin's lead back to double digits. Hanson, who scored 16
points in the second half, then hit a 12-foot jumper with 3:19 left
to extend the Badgers' lead to 68-56.Hanson opened the second half with 3-pointers on Wisconsin's two
possessions."Anytime you can hit a couple in a row, you get a good feel for
it," Hanson said. "That's what I did and the looks kept coming."Morley scored 12 points, all on 3-pointers, as Wisconsin took a
34-26 halftime lead."It looked like a shooting drill when they were going in,"
Ryan said.UC Santa Barbara was within 30-26 and appeared to pull even
closer on a putback dunk by Glenn Turner. Instead, Turner picked up
his third foul after being whistled for going over the back of
Wisconsin's Brian Butch.Butch made two free throws for a four-point swing, and Kam
Taylor scored with 4 seconds left to give the Badgers an
eight-point lead heading into halftime.
