Lawrence Carrier added 10 for UMass (2-0), while Anthony
Anderson had 13 rebounds.
Dominick Martin, who had a game-high 23 points for Yale (1-3),
scored his team's first six points. UMass shot a weak 27 percent
from the field in the first 10 minutes, trailing 15-9.
But just past the midway mark of the first half, Carrier and
Freeman put UMass ahead 16-15, starting a 14-2 run that put the
Minutemen ahead 23-17.
Freeman's 11 points put UMass ahead 32-26 at halftime.
Anderson added a 3-pointer to points from Art Bowers and Freeman
for UMass to start the second half. Yale used an 8-0 run to pull
within six (39-33), but Carrier and Maxwell had back-to-back
three-pointers to start the UMass pullaway.
Just past the 10-minute mark of the second half, free throws
from Freeman and hoops by Maxwell and Carrier put the Minutemen
Yale was hurt by a feeble 8-for-20 showing from the foul line,
and was out-rebounded 24-16 at the half and 51-33 for the game.
