LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Spencer Nelson scored 21 points as Utah State beat the University of Utah 71-45 Saturday in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

Nate Harris added 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting and Jaycee Carroll had 18 points for USU (5-1). The game was tight until Carroll scored seven straight points on three shots to give USU a 15-point edge at the 12:08 mark of the second half.

Andrew Bogut led scoring for Utah (4-2) with 15 points. Marc Jackson, who had 15 points, led Utah in scoring in the first half with 3-of-4 shots from the 3-point line, but USU held the guard to only two points in the second half.

Carroll shot one basket from well outside the 3-point arc as the clock expired in the second half, giving USU the first double-digit lead of the game.

USU's offense was able to draw the 7-foot Bogut away from the basket in the second half, giving Nelson and Harris seven layups.

Utah State ended up shooting 82 percent from the field in the second half, 65 percent for the game, while the Utes shot 41 percent in the game.

USU scored first in a defense-dominated first half, but the Utes led most of the way until a 8-2 run late in the half by the Aggies pushed them to a 32-28 halftime edge.

Harris dropped in a 2-foot jump shot at the 6:30 mark to give the lead to USU for good at 22-21. A steal by Nelson gave teammate David Pak a breakaway layup, and a lob to Harris then stretched USU's lead to 26-21.

Jackson led Utah with 13 points in the first half. Bogut, averaging 18 points per game, was held to six points in the first half.

This was the 217th game for the rivals. Utah State has won five of the last seven meetings, though Utah holds the overall edge 127-90.
