RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Nick Fazekas scored 25 points and grabbed 10
rebounds to lead Nevada to an 84-78 win Saturday night over
intrastate rival UNLV.
Kevinn Pinkney added 18 points and Mo Charlo 13 for the Wolf
Pack (4-1), who have won 18 straight at home dating to 2002. Romel
Beck scored 17 points, Odartey Blankson 15 and Louis Amundson 13
for UNLV (2-2).
Fazekas, who scored 17 points in the first half, made 8-of-14
from the field including two from 3-point range and 7-of-8 free
Tied 68-68, Fazekas passed inside to Jermaine Washington for a
dunk, then slammed it home himself the next time down the floor for
a 72-68 lead with 3:46 left. His 3-pointer from the top of the key
made it 75-68 at 2:47.
Beck answered with a 3-point goal to cut it to 76-72 with 2:09
but Nevada made all eight free-throw attempts in the final 1:47 to
seal the victory.
Pinkney scored the first six points of the game and Fazekas the
next five, including a 3-pointer to open a 11-0 lead, which grew to
29-15 when Kyle Shiloh hit from 3-point range 7:42 before the half.
UNLV answered with a 15-8 run capped by Joel Anthony's second
slam dunk to cut the lead to 37-30 at 3:55, but Seth Taylor
followed with a 17-footer, then hit a 3-point goal 2 seconds before
the halftime buzzer to put Nevada ahead 49-37.
UNLV opened the second half with a 16-6 run -- with six points
each by Blankson and Amundson -- to pull to within 55-53 at 15:31.
The Runnin' Rebels took their only lead 62-61 on Amundson's slam
dunk with 8:22 left.
