PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Ryan Gomes scored 20 of his 25 points
after halftime, sparking Providence to a 65-58 overtime win over
Rhode Island on Saturday.
With Providence trailing 46-40 with five minutes left, Gomes
scored 10 of the Friars' final 13 points to help force overtime.
Providence took a 52-50 lead with a minute left on Dwight
Brewington's dunk. But Hazelton tied the score with 5.7 seconds
left. The Friars outscored URI 12-5 in overtime, as Brewington
scored seven points and Gomes added five.
Providence, leading 24-22 at halftime, took a 29-22 lead to
begin the second half. Then the Rams went on a 16-6 run highlighted
by a four-point play by Hazelton, giving the Rams their first lead,
38-35, with 12:15 remaining in regulation.
