FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Darian Townes scored 20 points on
10-of-13 shooting Thursday night as Arkansas overcame occasional
sloppy play to take a 96-68 victory over Tennessee State.
The Razorbacks (7-1) shot 55 percent, but at times lacked the
zip they showed in a road victory over Missouri and a close loss to
then-No. 5 Illinois.But against Tennessee State (5-5), it often didn't matter. The
Tigers made only 12 of 33 shots in the second half and couldn't
keep up with the Razorbacks once they found their range.Rod Flowers, with 17 points and 11 rebounds, led Tennessee
State, while Wayne Arnold scored 14 and Roshaun Bowens scored 13.
Charles Thomas scored 15 and Ronnie Brewer scored 13 for the
Razorbacks.Tennessee State, behind Flowers' seven offensive rebounds, had
17 rebounds under its own basket but cold shooting -- 36 percent --
kept the Tigers from pulling within 10 late in the contest.Tiger defensive schemes broke down and Arkansas went to the free
throw line 24 times in the second half as the Razorbacks steadily
extended their lead. Each team had 13 turnovers, but Arkansas was
able to turn Tiger mistakes into 19 points. Tennessee State managed
only eight. The matchup featured two teams with coaches who took over from
coaches named Nolan Richardson.Arkansas fired Nolan Richardson Jr. in 2002 after he said
publicly that the school could buy out his contract if it wanted.
Nolan Richardson III resigned from Tennessee State in 2003. An NCAA
investigation was under way at the Nashville school and the school
administration said its coach had taken a gun into the arena after
an argument with an assistant.Arkansas hired Stan Heath to take over from its Richardson. Cy
