LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Dan Oppland had a game-high 22 points to lead
Valparaiso to a 75-68 victory over Longwood in the final round of
the Las Vegas Holiday Classic Friday.
Oppland had 18 first-half points, on 10-for-10 shooting from the
free-throw line, while going 2-for-2 from 3-point range in that
session. He also scored 13 consecutive Crusaders points late in the
first half, when Valparaiso took a 26-25 lead.
For the game, the Crusaders from the free-throw line were
16-of-17 or 94.1 percent, while the Lancers were 3-of-9 for 33.3
percent in the round-robin tournament game.
For Longwood (1-16), which kept the score close the entire game
and took a brief 44-41 in the second half, Michael Jefferson led
with 22 points and six rebounds. Jefferson was 6-of-16 from 3-point
But Valparaiso responded with a 17-2 run, which ended on a
Williams dunk with 1:53 left in the half. Longwood tied it at 35-35
just before the halftime buzzer on a Brandon Giles 3-pointer from
the right arc.
The Crusaders took the lead for good in the second half when Ron
Howard broke a 46-46 tie with the game's next eight points as their
lead went to 60-50, the largest of the game. The Lancers answered
with a 9-0 run before Valparaiso pulled away late.
