FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Ja'Vance Coleman scored 15 points and Mustafa Al-Sayyad added 14 points and 10 rebounds as Fresno State defeated San Jose State 63-56 on Sunday in a battle of cold-shooting teams.
Marquin Chandler had a game-high 21 points for the Spartans, who shot a season-low 32.3 percent from the field in suffering their sixth straight loss.Dreike Bouldin added 12 points on four three-pointers for the Bulldogs (8-3 overall, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference).San Jose State fell to 3-8 overall (0-2 WAC).Fresno State outrebounded the Spartans 48-31, including a 15-9 edge on the offensive glass.The Bulldogs led by as many 14 points in the second half, 54-40, after Coleman drove for a layup and sank a three-pointer during an 18-second span.Chandler's runner with 3:32 left trimmed the deficit to 56-49, but consecutive inside buckets by Al-Sayyad and Coleman put the game out of reach.Alex Elam added 14 points for San Jose State on 5-of-14 shooting, while Chandler surpassed the 20-point plateau in his fourth straight game.Al-Sayyad scored six of his 14 points in the final 4:42 for Fresno State, which shot 37.9 percent (11-of-29) in both halves.
