BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Chris Alexander made a layup and then
two free-throws in overtime to give Southern University a 53-50
victory over Texas Southern in the Southwestern Athletic Conference
opener for both teams.
The game went into overtime with both teams tied 44-44 at the
end of regulation. A jump shot from Sean Walker and a layup from
Bobby Cole gave Texas Southern (2-7, 0-1 SWAC) a quick 48-44 lead
before Jerimie Collier brought the margin back to within 48-46 with
a layup. Alvin Mott sank a 3-pointer with 2:48 remaining to give
the Jaguars (4-6, 1-0) a narrow 49-48 lead.
Justin Wilson hit a jump shot with 2:28 left in overtime to give
Texas Southern its final lead of the game, 50-49, before Alexander
gave Southern the winning margin.
Alexander and Mott led Southern with 16 points apiece, while
Peter Cipriano grabbed 13 rebounds.
Walker led Texas Southern with 13 points and Jason Arbet added
12. Mike Sneed grabbed 10 rebounds.
