VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) -- Dan Oppland scored 13 points, including
two free throws with 11 seconds left, and Valparaiso beat Western
Illinois 54-51 on Tuesday night in the Mid-Continent Conference
opener for both teams.
Western Illinois (4-8) trailed 52-42 with 2:43 remaining and
scored nine straight points on a dunk by Eulis Baez, two free
throws by Fred Oguns, a 3-pointer by Troy Okeson and layup by Oguns
to get within one with 20 seconds remaining.Baez, who had 22 points and 11 rebounds, fouled Oppland, with 11
seconds remaining. After a timeout by Valparaiso (5-8), Okeson
missed a 3-pointer that could have tied the game. Nathan Koster
rebounded for Western and threw up his own 3-point attempt, but it
missed.Shawn Huff added 12 points for Valparaiso.
