VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) -- Dan Oppland scored 13 points, including
two free throws with 11 seconds left, and Valparaiso beat Western
Illinois 54-51 on Tuesday night in the Mid-Continent Conference
opener for both teams.
Western Illinois (4-8) trailed 52-42 with 2:43 remaining and
scored nine straight points on a dunk by Eulis Baez, two free
throws by Fred Oguns, a 3-pointer by Troy Okeson and layup by Oguns
to get within one with 20 seconds remaining.
Baez, who had 22 points and 11 rebounds, fouled Oppland, with 11
seconds remaining. After a timeout by Valparaiso (5-8), Okeson
missed a 3-pointer that could have tied the game. Nathan Koster
rebounded for Western and threw up his own 3-point attempt, but it
Shawn Huff added 12 points for Valparaiso.
