    JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) -- Dewarick Spencer scored 16 points as the Indians started Sun Belt Conference play with an 83-58 win over South Alabama on Thursday.

    The Indians (8-5, 1-0) blew open a close game in the second half by hitting 10-of-12 field goal attempts at one point.

    South Alabama's Jeffrey Collins hit a 3-pointer from the wing to bring the Jags (3-9, 0-1) within two points at the 16:31 mark before the Indians went on a run.

    Leading 42-40, ASUs Jerry Nichols' 3-pointer capped a 13-0 run over the next 3:35 to put the Indians up 15.

    Spencer scored 10 points in the second half. Others in double digits for the Indians were Nichols with 14, J.J. Montgomery with 13, Kitus Witherspoon with 11, and Isaac Wells with 10.

    The Jags were paced by Mario Jointers 16 points. Richard Law and Collins each added 11.

    South Alabama relied on the 3-point shot, hoisting 31 attempts but netting just 12.

    Arkansas State outrebounded South Alabama 37-27.

    The Indians combined to hand out 24 assists on 33 field goals while turning over the ball just 11 times. Dereke Tipler had six assists, three steals, and four rebounds while not turning over the ball once.
