UMKC 84, Valparaiso 78

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) -- Mike English scored 26 points and
Carlton Aaron added 20 to lead Missouri-Kansas City to an 84-78
victory over Valparaiso in the Mid-Continent Conference on
Thursday.

UMKC (5-7, 4-0) took the lead for good at 57-55 on Aaron's
jumper with 13:44 remaining and built its advantage to as much as
eight points several times the rest of the way. It was the 15th
lead change of the game.

Valparaiso (6-10, 2-2) narrowed the margin to three points,
76-73, with 2:14 remaining on Ron Howard's jump shot, but Brandon
Temple immediately responded with his fourth 3-pointer in as many
attempts for the game, and the host Crusaders never came closer
than four points the rest of the game. The Kangaroos made 5-of-9
free throws in the time remaining to seal the victory.

UMKC shot 58 percent from the field for the game, including
16-of-27 in the second half. English, who had 18 points at
halftime, and Aaron led the marksmanship, making 9-of-14 and
10-of-15 field goals respectively.

Dan Oppland led Valparaiso with 24 points, but had only a single
point in the second half, when UMKC held him to three field goal
attempts and he missed all three. Howard finished with 22 points.

Temple finished with 16 points for UMKC and Quinton Day added
14.
