MIAMI (AP) -- Antonio Jones hit two free throws with 7 seconds
left in the fifth overtime to give Florida International a seesaw
118-114 win over Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday.
The Golden Panthers outscored the Trojans 15-11 in the final
overtime to win. Ismael N'Diaye scored 34 points and Ivan Almonte
added 24 points and had 16 rebounds for Florida International
(8-12, 1-6 Sun Belt Conference).
"We've had some injuries so our practices have been very short," said FIU coach Sergio Rouco. "But what I liked was that our guys were back smiling again, even when we were down in the second half.
"A winner is one who overcomes adversity. That's what we're trying to teach this team and tonight they learned a valuable lesson. Tonight, we found a way to win against one of the top team in the Sun Belt Conference. This is a great win for this program right now."
Jones hit all 10 of his free throw attempts in the game, racking
up 12 points. Junior Matias had 20 points.
In the fourth OT, Brandon Freeman tied it at 103-103 for the
Trojans with a jumper with 2 seconds left. In the third OT, Matias
hit one of two free throws with 42 seconds left, knotting the game
at 97.
Darius Eason put in a jumper to tie the game at 90 in the second
overtime. Regulation ended tied 73-73.
Freeman scored 38 points for the Trojans (12-8, 4-4), while
Richard Hardman added 20. Eason had 13 and Zack Wright scored 12.
The Trojans led 37-29 at the half, but Florida International
came on strong in the second half.
The Division I record for overtimes is seven, set when
Cincinnati beat Bradley 75-73 on Dec. 21, 1981.
