SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Blake Ahearn came off the bench to score
21 points to lead Southwest Missouri to its seventh straight win,
beating Drake University 85-78 Saturday.
Drake (8-1, 4-10 in Missouri Valley Conference), which trailed
by as many as 14 in the first half, got to within one with 3:51
left in the game but didn't score a field goal the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 17-7 run to cut
Southwest Missouri's 48-36 halftime lead to 55-53 with 13:57 left.
The Bears (14-8, 8-6) held Drake to two baskets and a free throw
over the next 5:10 while scoring 13 to take a 68-58 lead with 8:18
Drake used its full-court press to go on a 14-5 run and trail
73-72 with 3:51 on a 3-ponter by Nick Grant as the shot clock
Tamarr Maclin, who played less than two minutes in the first
half because of foul trouble, made a field goal and two free throws
to give Southwest Missouri a 77-72 lead with 2:20 left. The two
teams traded free throws the rest of the way.
Southwest Missouri was 55.6 percent from the field (25 of 45)
while Drake made just 38.7 percent (24 of 62).
Deke Thompson had 15 points for Southwest Missouri. Kellen
Easley scored 13 and Maclin finished with 11.
