SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Brandon Gay scored 21 of his career-high 31 points in the second half and Ross DeRogatis added a career-high 28 to lead San Diego to an 87-73 win over Santa Clara Thursday night.

Gay played a pivotal role in a 22-8 second-half run that allowed the Toreros to take control of the game. Gay scored 14 points in the run, including a pair of 3-pointers. his second 3-pointer capped the run to give San Diego (15-11, 7-6 West Coast Conference) a 60-52 lead with 11 minutes left.

DeRogatis tied the school record as he hit eight 3-pointers, including all six of his 3-point attempts in the first half. DeRogatis finished 8-for-10 from 3-point range.

Santa Clara (14-14, 7-6), which dropped into a third-place tie with San Diego in the WCC, trailed by 14 with 3:06 remaining before scoring eight consecutive points in 56 seconds to cut the lead to 76-70. But the Broncos could get no closer.

Gay made four 3-pointers and was 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Brice Vounang scored 10 points and had a game-high 15 rebounds for the Toreros, who shot 55.2 percent from the floor in the second half after making only 40.6 percent in the first half.

Doron Perkins led Santa Clara with 23 points.
