    Rams snap nine-game losing streak

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) -- Terrence Mack scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Rhode Island upset Saint Joseph's 65-60 on Saturday, in the Hawks' first game without injured forward John Bryant.

The Rams (5-20, 3-11 Atlantic 10) snapped a nine-game losing streak with the win and prevented Saint Joseph's from clinching the Atlantic 10 East title outright.

Pat Carroll led Saint Joseph's (15-10, 12-2) with 25 points.

The Hawks were playing their first game after losing Bryant to a broken arm after a controversial play in Tuesday's loss at Temple. But coach Phil Martelli refused to pin the loss on Bryant's injury or the fallout that followed.

"We haven't been on the road for nine games, we forgot what it takes on the road," said Martelli. "I don't think we were anywhere near men enough to win on the road in that situation."

Martelli also refused to comment on John Chaney's suspension, which resulted from his actions during Tuesday's game against Temple.

Angered by what he thought were illegal screens, Chaney put in seldom-used 6-foot-8, 250 pound Nehemiah Ingram against the Hawks to "send a message." Ingram, whom Chaney later referred to as a "goon," fouled Bryant hard, breaking his arm. Bryant will likely miss the rest of the season.

"Neither the players or I will comment on what went on this week," Martelli said Saturday. "This game had nothing to do with what went on [last week]."

Scott Hazelton added 14 points for Rhode Island, scoring five points in the final 1:33 as the Rams held on. J.R. Moore added 10 points for Rhode Island.

Rhode Island took a 41-38 lead on Mack's 3-pointer with 12:29 to play and led the rest of the way.

The Hawks, trailing 56-47 with 1:47 left, cut the lead to three points, 61-58, on Carroll's 3-pointer with 16 seconds left. But Hazelton and Jon Lucky sank a pair of foul shots each to seal the win.

Rhode Island held Saint Joseph's scoreless for a 5:17 stretch in the first half and took a 17-11 lead on Will Daniels' long jumper with 6:47 to play in the first half.

The Hawks led 29-27 at halftime.

Chet Stachitas was the only other Hawk in double figures, with 10 points.
