MD Baltimore Co 78, New Hampshire 73

VESTAL, N.Y. (AP) -- Brian Hodges scored a career-high 28 points
to lift University of Maryland Baltimore County to a 78-73 victory
over New Hampshire in the opening round of the America East
Conference Basketball Championship Friday night.

Ninth-seeded UMBC (11-17) scored 24 points off 19 New Hampshire
turnovers. Hodges, who converted eight of 17 shots from the floor
and was 8-for-8 from the line, scored 16 points in the opening half
to help the Retrievers build a 42-35 halftime lead.

New Hampshire, the No. 8 seed, cut the deficit to 44-43 early in
the second half when Jermaine Anderson sank a pair of foul shots.
But the Retrievers responded with a 10-1 run to open up a 54-44
lead. John Zito finished off the spurt with a dunk off a fast
break.

UMBC led by as many as 14 points on two occasions, 62-48 on a
Michael Knight three-point basket and 64-50 on a layup by Mike
Houseman.

The Wildcats (9-19) drew within three points, 74-71, when senior
Ben Sturgill tipped in an offensive rebound with 36.3 seconds
remaining. UMBC clinched the win when Hodges sank his final four
free throw attempts.

Andrew Feeley scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds for
UMBC. Knight and Seth Davis scored 11 points each.

Blagjov Janev led the Wildcats with 20 points. Sturgill and
Craig Walls each added 14.

The Retrievers take on top-seeded Vermont Saturday in the
quarterfinals.
