VESTAL, N.Y. (AP) -- Brian Hodges scored a career-high 28 points to lift University of Maryland Baltimore County to a 78-73 victory over New Hampshire in the opening round of the America East Conference Basketball Championship Friday night.

Ninth-seeded UMBC (11-17) scored 24 points off 19 New Hampshire turnovers. Hodges, who converted eight of 17 shots from the floor and was 8-for-8 from the line, scored 16 points in the opening half to help the Retrievers build a 42-35 halftime lead.

New Hampshire, the No. 8 seed, cut the deficit to 44-43 early in the second half when Jermaine Anderson sank a pair of foul shots. But the Retrievers responded with a 10-1 run to open up a 54-44 lead. John Zito finished off the spurt with a dunk off a fast break.

UMBC led by as many as 14 points on two occasions, 62-48 on a Michael Knight three-point basket and 64-50 on a layup by Mike Houseman.

The Wildcats (9-19) drew within three points, 74-71, when senior Ben Sturgill tipped in an offensive rebound with 36.3 seconds remaining. UMBC clinched the win when Hodges sank his final four free throw attempts.

Andrew Feeley scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds for UMBC. Knight and Seth Davis scored 11 points each.

Blagjov Janev led the Wildcats with 20 points. Sturgill and Craig Walls each added 14.
