BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Tech freshman A.D. Vassallo
tipped a missed shot into his own basket just before the buzzer to
give Bowling Green a 72-71 victory on Saturday in the NABC Classic
and its first win over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since
1967.
John Floyd of Bowling Green put up an off-balance jumper with 3
seconds left, and in the scramble for the rebound Vassallo tipped
it into the wrong basket.
"I got off the floor as quick as I could -- they weren't going
to get us back on," Falcons coach Dan Dakich said about any
possible dispute on the tip-in.
Martin Samarco led Bowling Green (1-1) with 21 points and Floyd
had 17.
Coleman Collins had 22 for the Hokies (1-1). Vassallo had three
points.
"There's 30 games in a season," Virginia Tech coach Seth
Greenberg said. "I'm not jumping off any buildings."
The Falcons led by 10 points with 9:30 left in the first half,
but the Hokies were within 33-28 at halftime.
A 9-2 run gave the Falcons a 66-56 lead with 5:05 left. Tech
then went on a 15-6 run, taking their first lead since early in the
first half on
Zabian Dowdell's layup with 13 seconds left.
