    Southern Miss 79, Lamar 76

    FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) -- Jason Forte and Kyle Lamonte hit four free throws apiece in the final 56 seconds and Southern Mississippi defeated Lamar 79-76 Friday in the quarterfinals of the BP Top of the World Classic.

    The Golden Eagles (1-0) overcame 23 turnovers to hold off Lamar (0-1).

    Southern Mississippi trailed 27-26 at the half but used a 15-4 run capped by Jarekus Singleton's 3-pointer to take its biggest lead, 46-36, with 13 minutes remaining.

    The Golden Eagles held a nine-point lead with four a half minutes remaining when Lamar closed the gap.

    A 3-pointer by Jeremy Long capped a 14-5 Lamar run that tied the game at 70 with 1:15 remaining.

    But the Cardinals hit just two field goals the rest of the way and Southern Miss locked up the game by hitting 9-of-12 free throws.

    Forte led Southern Miss with 18 points, including seven free throws, and nine rebounds. Lamonte added 17 and Singleton and Shaun Simpson each had 13.

    The Golden Eagles held a 38-29 rebound advantage and took 40 free throws to the Cardinals' 16.

    Long led Lamar with 22 points and four assists. Alan Daniels added 20 and Brandon Chappell scored 10.

    Lamar missed all 12 3-point attempts in the first half and finished 6-for-23 from behind the arc.
