FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) -- Jason Forte and Kyle Lamonte hit four
free throws apiece in the final 56 seconds and Southern Mississippi
defeated Lamar 79-76 Friday in the quarterfinals of the BP Top of
the World Classic.
The Golden Eagles (1-0) overcame 23 turnovers to hold off Lamar
Southern Mississippi trailed 27-26 at the half but used a 15-4
run capped by Jarekus Singleton's 3-pointer to take its biggest
lead, 46-36, with 13 minutes remaining.
The Golden Eagles held a nine-point lead with four a half
minutes remaining when Lamar closed the gap.
A 3-pointer by Jeremy Long capped a 14-5 Lamar run that tied the
game at 70 with 1:15 remaining.
But the Cardinals hit just two field goals the rest of the way
and Southern Miss locked up the game by hitting 9-of-12 free
Forte led Southern Miss with 18 points, including seven free
throws, and nine rebounds. Lamonte added 17 and Singleton and Shaun
Simpson each had 13.
The Golden Eagles held a 38-29 rebound advantage and took 40
free throws to the Cardinals' 16.
Lamar missed all 12 3-point attempts in the first half and
finished 6-for-23 from behind the arc.
